I specialize in strategic science communications, or as I like to say, transcribing & translating your brand’s DNA.
I founded LR Bio to work closer with emerging biotechs, collaborating with founders and researchers to develop science narratives and corporate comms that are faithful to the source code, have high affinity and efficacy, and are on-target.
My bona fides:
Scientific Expertise
I will always be a scientist, first and foremost. I have a Ph.D from the University of Washington and was a postdoc in the department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley. However, I credit the five years I spent as an editor at the broad-scope life sciences journal PLOS Biology for the breadth and depth of my biological knowledge. There, I developed my skills in creating compelling science narratives that extend the conversation about cutting-edge advances beyond subject matter experts, without watering down the science.
Content & Content Marketing
While working as an editorial partner at Andreessen Horowitz, I learned how to turn scientific narratives into content that connected with a desired audience and supported key business goals. Most notably, I developed, produced, hosted, and edited the podcast Bio Eats World with my co-host Hanne Winarsky, along with the support of the editorial and bio teams. I learned the importance of context and storytelling rhythms for engaging an audience, and how to present ideas in a manner that bolsters the mission and worldview of the organization.
Corporate Communications
Most recently, I led communications at two early-stage startups, Felix Biotechnologies and Arcadia Science. At both companies, my first task was to drive their website redesign processes. At Arcadia, this involved contracting a design partner, managing every step of the process, writing the website copy to capture the complex company mission, providing guidance on visuals and site style, and organizing the launch. I love working with founders to transmute their vision into a digital destination. In these roles, I also aided founders in creating and promoting thought-leadership pieces, evolved scientific narratives into corporate narratives, developed legacy and social media strategies, collaborated on omni-channel content, organized and executed virtual events, and advised on internal communications.
Etc.
Outside of work, I love to be outside: running, swimming, birding, backpacking, or simply loafing in my backyard with my dog. I’m an avid reader of “the classics” and am always looking to broaden my canon.
My services are bespoke.
I start by digging in deep with founders and stakeholders, understanding your science and business at the molecular level – or ‘reading your DNA’. I then work to transcribe messages from that DNA that will resonate with your target audiences. We’ll then translate these messages into communication products and strategies that catalyze business.
Transcription activities include:
Developing scientific and corporate messaging for internal and external audiences
Crafting scientific narratives for scholarly publications, whitepapers, pitch decks, and content
Translation activities include:
Establishing web presence (co-developing websites and visuals)
Crafting ‘owned’ content (blogs, videos, podcasts, social)
Generating ‘earned’ media (identifying media opportunities, crafting pitches, providing media training)
Developing strategies to maximize the impact of the company’s science
